I am athletic and muscular, weighing 225 lbs and 5′10″.I need ideas for advanced level ski and h.v.l. boot?
I am currently torn between ‘08 metron 9, 08 rossignal z11, and volkl tigershark 10ft…
I am looking to stay under $600 for skis and $400 for boots, so I am shopping ebay and other net stores for closeouts of ‘07 and ‘08 models. But am leaning towards nordica diablo flame(08) but i ran across a pair of tecnica vento 10 but cant find much info (width/last or stiffness.
Boots first, they are the critical piece of equipment. Go to ski shops and find which brand and model fits your foot the best. Choosing a boot from a promotional brochure is not the way to buy a pair of boots. It depends on your foot shape. Each brand seems to be a slightly different shell shape and this will be critical if you ski all day long and are in them 3-6 days a week. When you take your boots off your feet should be ready to go dancing not screaming in pain.
About your skis from your size. I would guess you need a good pair of high performance skis about 170-180 cm. It depends on what type of skiing you do which will suit you best. I’m about 5 lbs heavier and I teach on 170’s I use K2 in most cases with a pair of Rossignol for back up and rock skis. All 3 of the skis you mention are very good. I have not used a Volkl, but they seem to be a good ski as are the Rossignol. Of the 3 I liked the Atomics, but they had a binding problem about 5 years ago and I gave up on them. The Rossignol ski, binding set puts me too high in the heel and I have foot pains so they are not used as much. When you decide to buy, talk with your boot fitter and learn what the amount of delta fits you best. This is the heel rise of the boot, binding, ski combination and it can be modified to suit your body. I find I ski best with no heel rise, most bindings have several mm and can be as much as 10. I hope this helps, have fun.
